5 Steps to Fun & Easy Clutter Clearing

5 Steps to Fun & Easy Clutter Clearing

Spring is a time for new beginnings. For some of us, the intrepid dive into the overtures of spring is strongly tied to spring cleaning and clutter clearing.  Although cathartic, this concept can be overwhelming, causing anxiety, grief, and even defeatism. For others, it is the opportunity to let go of the old, let in the new and bring vital energy into the home. For those of you that fall into the first category, I have some tips and tricks to make the experience as painless and enjoyable as possible for you!

Where I Think My Pack-Rat Tendencies Began...

My dichotomous relationship with clutter began as a child. My father enjoys keeping and collecting things. In fact, one of his favourite hobbies is perusing garage sales and the like for forgotten treasures. My mother, on the other hand, is quite entirely the opposite in this regard. If she can’t recall the purpose of an item or if it’s past its expiry date, it’s gone. I remember growing up asking her, “Mom, where did you put my (insert name of missing toy, game, marble, shell I found on the beach)?” Without skipping a beat her inevitable response was always, “I don’t know honey, I haven’t seen you playing with that for a while...” Translation: it's in the trash or on its way to a charitable donation.

This led to my consequential hidden pack-rat tendencies. After all, if mom couldn’t find my toy, I couldn't toss it! Unfortunately, this led to behavioural patterns of keeping clutter in “organized, hidden spaces”. (Some call this “storage”). Sound familiar? Yet, even though things may look clean and coordinated on the surface, dig a little deeper (under the mattress, in the drawers, in the laundry room and God forbid the storage room) and you’ve got quite a different story...

You'll probably agree with me when I say that clutter like this not only affects the aesthetics of the space itself but it also has a psychologically effect on us. A cluttered home, whether it be in the open or in clandestine spaces, drains our precious creative energy. Constantly trying to find that thing you forgot you had makes bringing in new experiences troublesome, to say the least. Not to mention that shopping becomes coloured with a twinge of guilt when in your mind you're thinking, "Where the **** am I going to put that?" In a word, if energy isn't flowing at home, you better believe it will affect your health, career, finances, and any other area of your life you can think of.

You can do it - clear your clutter!

On the other hand, a clean home with meaningful accent pieces gives room for creativity to thrive. A clean kitchen wants to be cooked in, a comforting, warm living room invites friendly guests, and a nurturing bedroom invites *ahem* well, you get the idea...

There's Hope

Ok, now what?! "Yes, yes," you say, "I understand this concept intellectually, but clearing clutter in practice is SO difficult! Can you to it for me? Please!?" You might even get started and then get so overwhelmed and distracted that you just give up and end up ordering pizza for delivery while turning off the lights to watch your favourite TV series on Netflix just so you don't have to see the wasteland of objects that surrounds you.

So how can you tidy up in a way that isn't so painful? My promise to you is that in the following paragraphs I will not only give you the steps and tools to make the process of clutter clearing an easier process but even fun and enjoyable one!

Are you ready? Let's get started:

Step 1: Be Brave, Identify ALL Your Clutter

Step 2: Brighten Up the Space to Get in the Mood

Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session

Step 4: Instructions for Your Clutter Clearing Session

Step 5: What To Do with Your Boxes

Step 1: How do to Identify Clutter

Anything that you do not use, do not like, or has passed its usefulness date is identified as "clutter". If it has low, stagnant energy, is taking up otherwise useful space, it is also clutter. If it has negative memories or emotions connected to the item, it is clutter. If the space feels overwhelming, depressing, or congested, if you can’t find the things you’re looking for, then the space is cluttered.

Step 2: Brighten Up the Space to Get in the Mood

Do you want to know the secret to making clearing sessions fun, fast and energetic? Here it is. If the energy of the space you are trying to clear has low, negative energy, you want to counter it with positive, vibrant energy before you begin your clutter clearing session.

How you do this? It’s up to you. First and foremost, think of the emotional energy you want to bring into the space. How do you want to feel when you walk into that room in your house? Do you want it to feel fun, lively, warm, cozy, or sensual? Then do something that makes you feel good. Here are some of my favourite ideas:

  • Take a shower
  • Put on some energetic dance music
  • Turn up the lights
  • Light a candle or incense
  • Diffuse some bright-smelling essential oils like lemon, lavender, grapefruit, or bergamot

Don’t underestimate this step, as it is the most important part. It creates the excitement and energy you need to complete the task in the most fun and efficient manner!

Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session

Planning

Plan your first session to be no more than 30 minutes in duration. After each session, make sure to reward yourself in some way, be it with a walk on the beach, a phone call to a good friend, indulging in a piece of delicious chocolate, watching a movie or shopping for that pair of shoes you’ve been holding out on. Again, the reward IS the most important step. Clutter clearing is hard work and if you can associate the task with pleasant rewards, the more likely you’ll continue the practice in the future. Furthermore, keeping to the 30-min mark will give you the motivation to go with gusto during that time instead of torturing yourself for hours of sloth-like half attempts and not accomplishing much in the end.

Supplies

  • 3 boxes (or bags) labelled “In Box”, “Out Box”, and “I Don’t Know Box”
  • A clock to watch the time

Step 4: How to Conduct the Clutter Clearing Session

So, now you’re ready to get rockin’ but still not sure how exactly to start? Here are the steps:

  1. Set an energetic tone and rhythm for your clearing session. Use upbeat music to help you keep in the flow and don’t slow down to think.
  2. Reaffirm to yourself that you only have to make three choices - Keep, Trash/Donate/Sell, and I Don’t Know. If you get stuck, just throw it in the “I Don’t Know” Box and keep hustling!
  3. Pick item an item from the pile and make a split decision. This is important, as your first gut reaction is usually the right one.
  4. This is the key: proceed in same energetic rhythm, don’t slow the pace - keep it up for the whole 30 minutes.
  5. Once you hit the 30-minute mark, STOP! Train yourself to believe that clutter clearing is a positive, beneficial and even fun and easy experience. Keep to 30 minutes and you’ll be able to maintain the necessary energetic rhythm to accomplish this feat. Tomorrow, or the next day you’ll want to continue the session.

Basically, the key to success in the clutter clearing session is to stay in the rhythm and end on time. Also, if you place all your clutter items in a pile it’ll make the session more efficient. Another good tip is to choose your favourite music in advance so as to not waste any precious time.

It is best to plan at least one session a week, but no more than three. You can also have a designated clutter area, or clutter drawer so that clutter doesn’t accumulate in tiny piles all around your home.

Step 5: What To Do with Your Boxes

So what to do with those 3 boxes?

  • The “In Box” is fairly self-explanatory. These are the items you can keep. With one caveat, however. You must have a place to put them! If you don’t, you may have to let them go.

  • The “Out Box” goes out, of course. If the item truly is junk, you can recycle or throw it in the trash. If it still has some life in it, you can give it away, sell it, or donate it to charity. I like to attach an emotion or characteristic of myself that I want to pare away from my character as I let go of the item so I am cathartically “clearing myself” as well. I always make sure to bless the items before I give them away, however, so that wherever they end up they bring blessings, happiness and joy to someone to the extent which it no longer serves me. This makes me happy to give the things away and makes the emotional process easier. Once this box is full, try and get it out of the house as soon as possible. You want to clear the energy in your home and you don’t want to risk the temptation of rummaging through your own garbage again, figuratively speaking, undoing all the hard work you just put into this process!

  • The “I Don’t Know Box” will be replete with items that are heavy with memories and emotions. You may have some serious energetic ties attached to the items in your “I Don’t Know” Box. This is to be expected and just remember, you can keep them in this box until you do know what to do with them. These are likely the things you know are clutter and no longer serve you, but that have strong chords of attachment to our psyche. Naturally, these things are the hardest to get rid of. Again, you can go through the items and hold each one, feeling the energy behind it. Does it bring sadness? Nostalgia? Depression? Shame, anger, doubt, fear, etc.? If it’s any of the negative emotions see if you can “Let Go” of that part of yourself that stops you from being the brightest and fullest “You”.
Grandma's elephants

For example, maybe you have an expensive tennis bracelet from an abusive ex-partner and you love the bracelet but every time you look at it it reminds you of when you couldn’t speak up for yourself. Now, do you really want to keep it? Doesn't looking at the item in this matter make it a little easier to leave behind in the past? Once you bring the unconscious to the conscious it makes things much clearer. Attach this meaning to the bracelet and put the thing on eBay, bring it to a pawn shop, give it to a girlfriend whose 50th birthday is coming up. Again, remember to bless it before you give it away. If you truly can’t bear parting with some items in the “I Don’t Know Box," simply place it in storage for 6 months and mark your calendar. If you can’t remember what’s inside of it, donate it to charity without opening it. If this seems too drastic for you, garner the help of a trusting friend to help you work through the box again. And hey, who knows? Maybe that white elephant statue your grandmother left you finally has a place in your décor!

Enjoy your Freedom!

You might already have the sense that when you enter a room, especially a room as intimate as one in your own home, you subconsciously react to it. You may feel peaceful, happy, invigorated, or frustrated, overwhelmed, sad or even annoyed because of the energy of the space. Clutter is a huge impediment to positive energy. Piles of unread mail, dusty surfaces, and cluttered pathways drain your energy. Clearing the clutter in your home leads to feelings of relaxation, restoration, and productivity.

In order to further maintain this clarity, make sure to maintain an organizational system for your house, including a clutter drawer where you can put clutter for an intermittent period to prevent clutter from accumulating in other areas of your house. (Yes, you can keep a clutter drawer - just make sure to empty it out periodically!)

Step 2: Brighten Up the Space to Get in the Mood

Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session

Step 4: Instructions for Your Clutter Clearing Session

Hopefully, this method has brought you some hope and clarity to your clutter clearing sessions. Perhaps when you can see it as a joyful experience and even spiritual in its practice, you'll be able to engage in it more frequently and with a renewed fervour and zest for life.

Now that you’ve let go of the old, it's time to let in the new! Get ready for new experiences, opportunities, and people to enter your life and revived clarity and creativity to spring forth!
